New Technology Provides Digital Patient Visits and Consults

Can Videoconferencing Improve the Patient-Doctor Relationship?Have you ever wondered whether it would be easier to do a patient consultation with a video-conference, instead of through the usual in-person visit?

Some doctors and physicians who have patients scattered all around the state and country find it easier to relay information to their patient over the phone or by email, instead of having the patient come in for an appointment. To get the face-to-face interaction that’s often needed during the appointment, videoconferencing offers a multitude of benefits and may be a better option for many health professionals and specialists.

How Telemedicine Works

“Telemedicine” is an emerging trend for many health professionals, providing physicians and medical professionals with the opportunity to relay pertinent information to patients without an in-office visit. Web entities such as the  Ontario Telemedicine Network have over 3,000 health care professionals that work at over 1,175 sites around Ontario.

The site managed to deliver 135,000 patient visits in 2011 alone, giving patients a chance to “meet” with their doctor from the comfort of home. This network is taking advantage of Vidyo’s technology that’s designed to deliver “digital patients” and make the consultation process that much easier.

Are Digital Patients and Consults the Way to Go?

Plastic surgeons, cosmetic dentists, medical spa professionals and other health professionals offering elective surgery treatments may be able to take advantage of this innovative technology, but there are still some limitations of digital patient visits and consults. The initial consultation with your patient is often the most critical, because this visit not only gives you a chance to see the patient up close and address his or her major concerns, but also helps you better understand what the patient really wants, and what his or her goals are. This is your opportunity to sell more services, recommend a treatment plan, and provide the patient with a tour of the facilities.

For elective surgery professionals, videoconferencing may be an efficient way to handle follow-up visits, answer general questions, and to advise and coach the patient during the post-op phases.
