Are Sites Like Groupon and LivingSocial Fee-Splitting?

If you’re one of the many doctors and practices that have been approached by daily deal sites like Groupon and LivingSocial, you may be wondering if there are any real benefits of marketing your practice in this way. We talked about whether Groupon was an unethical way to acquire patients for your practice earlier this year, and highlighted the fact that you are putting your practice’s brand reputation on the line by participating in this type of marketing. The American Medical Association believes that deal sites can harm your business if you are not prepared for the influx of new patients.

Take Our Poll:

We wanted to know what doctors around the country thought of deal sites like Groupon and LivingSocial. Here are some of their statements: “If a dentist enters into a contract with an organization like Groupon, and the contract calls for a consumer to pay Groupon a fee and then Groupon keeps part of the fee and gives the dentists an amount of money and the name of a patient, this would be a violation of the Board’s rule and the licensee could be subject to disciplinary action by the Board.”Patrick Braatz, Executive Director of the Oregon Board of Dentistry and the Board of Chiropractic Examiners

“So far there’s no provision for a Groupon discount as far as any CPT code so I guess when billing if any of it comes under medical billing in an office, folks will need to get creative and put Groupon right up there with co-pay for this style of business expands further into healthcare.” ~ OC Register Blog

“Groupon requires that you pay them a percentage of the fees collected for a professional medical service, and therefore it is fee splitting. In fact, I have called regulators in my state and have confirmed this.” ~ Forum Member on StudentDoctor.net

“It raises all sorts of ethical dilemmas to have people pre-purchase a therapy session through a third party. In this economy, it can be appealing to think that there are creative shortcuts to building a practice and getting people into our offices. But we have to be very careful in considering the impact of the new marketing and social networking tools.” ~ Dr. K. Holmes, Psycotherapist

Attract More Patients by Leveraging Online Customer Reviews

Add the LocateADoc.com Recommendation Button to Your Website!

Make sure you are listed on LocateADoc.com! Place the above image on your website and in your blog to encourage patients to recommend you online. Get your recommendation button now!

You can write as much as you want about your practice and use creative marketing strategies to attract patients, but prospective patients are more likely to listen when they hear about you from someone else.

According to the results of a 2011 study by BrightLocal, 69 percent of local consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. As more patients go online to find doctors and learn about local businesses, it’s essential that your practice has several online reviews and ratings.

Online customer reviews, patient testimonials and word-of-mouth marketing are every doctor’s and practice’s most valuable assets. Positive, honest reviews give patients a chance to learn about you through other patient’s experiences, and they may be more likely to choose you when they are comparing you to other practices in the area.

Make sure you’re giving satisfied patients every option possible for posting a review or testimonial about you online. Local reviews can increase your visibility in the online marketplace and help you stand apart from the competition. Think about how your practice will look among your competitors when you have five-star ratings next to your name and dozens of positive reviews.

Follow these action steps to leverage online patient reviews and attract more patients:

  1. Take advantage of local listings sites. Make sure your practice is located on LocateADoc.com and encourage your patients to recommend you here. Adding patient reviews or testimonials right on your LocateADoc.com profile will make it incredibly easy for prospective patients to learn more about you. They will have more confidence that you can deliver the results they want when they read other patients? firsthand experiences.
  2. Encourage satisfied patients to comment on online directories. If you’re listed on Google Places, Yellow Pages and similar online directories, make sure your patients know about it! Send them links to your listing or give them a card to fill out with directions on how to add a review on these sites. Make it as easy as possible for patients to provide some feedback.
  3. Add a “Reviews” tab on your Facebook page. You can add a tab just for reviews so that Facebook fans have direct access to a stream of great reviews. Add this to your page and encourage fans to submit a review.
  4. Download the picture in this post and add it to your website. Include a footer that links patients back to the review page on LocateADoc.com.
  5. Send follow up emails requesting a review. After your patient is near the end of their recovery period and preparing to come back for their last visit, send out a follow up email requesting a review of their experience. Make sure this is timed close to their final visit so they can write about something that is still fresh in their minds.
